Streaming Current Monitor Transformed into Integrated Coagulation Controller
In 2022, Uisce Éireann announced a €12 million (approximately $13 million USD) upgrade to the Lettermacaward Water Treatment Plant in County Donegal, Ireland. According to the Asset Delivery Regional Lead at Uisce Éireann:
“This investment in local water infrastructure will improve drinking water quality and ensure a more reliable supply in this popular tourist region.“

As part of the upgrade, Uisce Éireann implemented Process Instruments’ (Pi) StreamerSense, a streaming current monitor designed to enhance coagulation control in drinking water treatment. StreamerSense measures the residual charge in coagulated water, providing real-time feedback on the amount of positively charged coagulant needed to achieve charge neutralization in raw water.
By 2025, Uisce Éireann sought to integrate its current measurement parameters into a unified coagulation control system. Because the StreamerSense is powered by Pi’s CRIUS®4.0 instrument controller, this integration was efficient and cost-effective. Using Modbus communication protocols, one of Pi’s service engineers configured the StreamerSense to collect and analyze data from various independent sensors, including free chlorine, total chlorine, pH, and turbidity, transforming the setup into a fully functional coagulation controller.
One of the standout advantages of Pi’s technology is its modular architecture. Pi’s instruments are engineered for interoperability and scalability, allowing operators to seamlessly add components or retrofit existing systems. Each module can be independently upgraded or replaced, which reduces system downtime and lowers total cost of ownership. This flexibility ensures long-term adaptability to evolving technologies and changing operational needs without requiring complete system overhauls.
